Show/Hide Blurb

Tristan Fitz-James, the Marquess of Bridebourne, has been in love with his best friend, Lady Sophia Rowan, his entire life. He’s about to propose at Christmas when fate cruelly pulls the lovers apart. Two years later, when they meet again at the same holiday house party, they’re enemies. Tristan has earned a reputation as a London libertine, and Sophia wants nothing to do with him. He broke her heart once, and she vows it’ll not happen again.

When they’re locked together in a room during a festive game of hide and seek, secrets and passions flare in the dark until they’re discovered by other guests. There is only one solution that’s honorable. Marriage.

Tristan is determined to win back Sophia even though she would rather throw away her reputation than marry the man who stole her heart then stomped on it. Undeterred, he vows to find a way to show her how good they are together.

It’ll take more than mistletoe and holiday goodwill to mend these broken hearts and bring the two of them together again. Yet, Tristan has always believed in Christmas miracles. He just has to show Sophia that Christmas present and the promise of Christmas future will overcome their past.

Can wishing upon a star ever come true?

Abigail Grantham has always taken a keen interest in astronomy since her brother Sir John Grantham enlisted her aid as a young girl to keep records of his astronomical discoveries. Abigail is delighted when her uncle, Lord Longmore, invites her to stay at Longmore Hall in Buckinghamshire as he needs her assistance to compile a star chart.

When Abigail arrives at the Hall, her Aunt Longmore introduces her to local society. However, Abigail also spends a great deal of time in her uncle’s observatory, viewing the night skies alongside her uncle’s neighbor, fellow astronomer William, Viscount Rochvale.

Lord Rochvale is intrigued by Abigail, and when he discovers that they share an interest in ancient buildings and Roman history, he contrives to become better acquainted with her away from her uncle’s observatory, taking her to places of archaeological interest with a view to winning her heart. But the astronomical project they are working on makes courtship difficult, and William’s plans are further frustrated by his rakish cousin Gerald Burnby, who becomes a frequent visitor to Longmore Hall, seeking out Abigail too.

After a valuable Roman urn disappears from Longmore Hall, a series of mysterious occurrences unravel, presenting a puzzle Abigail has no idea how to solve. However, when events escalate into peril, Abigail discovers that it is the night sky that holds the secret to the missing urn—as well as to her stolen heart.

From pitfalls to perfection – your essential Regency writing companion

Are you writing stories set in Regency England? Do you want your characters and settings to feel authentic? Then this is the book to help you escape common pitfalls and breathe authenticity into your writing.

Writing Regency England is the only guidebook tailored specifically to help you to avoid the most commonly seen errors in Regency fiction. All historical authors face the challenge of not having lived during the time they are describing, and also share the problem of “you don’t know what you don’t
know.” No one gets everything right! But non-British authors writing about England also have the disadvantage of not being steeped in the language, geography, culture and history of the country from living there. While some readers don’t care about accuracy as long as a story is good, others do
and if you get too many things wrong, they may leave bad reviews and put you on their ‘authors to avoid’ list.

British author Jayne Davis and American author Gail Eastwood combine their perspectives and meticulous research to offer invaluable insights into Regency language, setting, and society. Expanded from a presentation given at the RFW conference in 2021, this indispensable guide illuminates common
pitfalls but also can spark creative ideas rooted in the authentic details of Regency life.

Graham Islington—Viscount Aldren—is no stranger to life’s foibles. After being given his title from the Regent for heroic services to the Crown during the war, he’s used his retirement from the military as an excuse to find scandal and sin in the beau monde. Lady Caroline Marlowe—sister to the duke of Lockwood—just turned nine and twenty. She suffers from boredom and is sick to death of London, as well as her brother’s rules, and needs excitement to relieve ennui. Everything changes when the man she’s harbored a secret tendre for shows up at her house in the middle of an autumn night trailing gossip, bloodied hands, and quite possibly murder. He demands her brother’s assistance, but with the duke busy with his new life, the responsibility lies with her.

As the two are thrown into a sticky web of revenge, forced proximity leads to forbidden desire between the viscount and Caroline. With reputations at stake, society matrons cutting them to ribbons with gossip, and trouble nipping at their heels, they will need to prove their mettle, especially when the madman grows desperate enough to put Graham’s life into jeopardy. If she wants a romance for the ages, Caroline will have to ignore familial expectations as well as her own doubts and risk everything for that chance… providing they both survive.

A title he revels in as it sells more books and annoys the very devil out of his haughty brother, the duke. Miss Perriton never expected a bookseller to look like Lord Whitcombe

She means to use the sales to gain financial independence and to establish a home for women who wish to retire from the streets of Seven Dials.

Never again will he allow himself that vulnerability and has, instead, kept himself busy with various vices every fine gentleman of the beau monde indulges in. If only he’d stayed away from the tables at the famed Lyon’s Den gaming hell that night, he might not have been caught up in fate’s unfortunate web, which brought him face-to-face with the past.

In want of vengeance…Miss Olivia Rose Jameson wants nothing to do with men—whether related to her or not. With her parents dead and her worthless brother losing everything of value at the gambling tables, she’s incensed when her hand is bartered for his freedom. That complication will not help her cause of having revenge on the man who killed her best friend, until chance matches her with the object of her ire.

Forgiveness has a way of changing everything… With no choice but to wed at the order of the mysterious Mrs. Dove-Lyon, the pair ushers in the Christmastide season as a married couple. No matter that Ashbury’s heart is locked away and Olivia wishes to carve it from his chest, more than compassion and secrets are shared between the enemies-to-lovers one snowy evening in the viscount’s library. As desire gives way to romance, fate once more intervenes. For one terrible night, everything hangs in the balance, and nothing short of a miracle—or love—can save them.

Because doesn’t the house—and Mrs. Dove-Lyon—always win?

Featured Member for August: Meredith Bond

QG: When did you first get hooked (and what hooked you) on the Regency era?

The first Regency romance I ever read was Friday’s Child by Georgette Heyer. Her dialogue was nothing like anything I’d ever read before. It was funny and just so outlandish I sat and giggled my way through the book. I got caught up in the romance and the wonderful, odd characters. And the happy ending was a cherry on top of this delicious, wonderful cake. I wanted more.

Friday’s Child did not end up being my favorite of Heyer’s books, that was always a tie between The Toll Gate and These Old Shades.

QG: What advice would you give to writers just starting out?https://thebeaumonde.com/main/wp-admin/post-new.php

The first piece of advice I always give to new writers—and to writers who’ve been at it a while—is to work on their writing craft and never stop learning and trying new things. Writing is a practice (like being a lawyer or a doctor). There are always new things to try, new ideas on how to tell a story or structure one, new ways to go about the business of writing. Never stop reading and learning.

QG: Tell us about your current project or latest release.

My latest releases were a really fun series called Royals & Rebels. The first book of the series is based on The Prisoner of Zenda where a young woman is asked to impersonate a princess who is missing (Book One: In Lieu of a Princess). We learn in the second book that she’s missing because she’s gone in search of her brother who was reported as having drowned while crossing the English Channel. The princess doesn’t believe her brother is dead and goes in search of him (Princess on the Run). In the third book he is, in fact, in hiding while he investigates who is attempting to kill him (A Prince Among Spies). The three books have a continuing mystery running through them, although each individual book has a happily ever after.

QG: What comes first, plot or characters?

Always the characters. They are the heart of every story I write.

QG: Do you have a daily writing schedule and goals? What are they?

Every day I start my day by writing what I had planned the previous day (I keep a writing journal). I try to write between 1500 and 2500 words a day. And then I end my writing time by planning out what I’ll write the next day.

QG: Is there a special quote or saying that motivates you as a writer?

So many!! I love writing quotes. Here are two of my favorite:

“Don’t believe everything you think.”

“All I need is a sheet of paper and something to write with and I can turn the world upside down.” Friedrich Nietzche

QG: Pantser or Plotter or hybrid?

I’ve tried them all and have found that I need to do at least some plotting. Some books need more than that, some only need the basic turning points for me to know where the story needs to go.

QG: Would you like to travel back in time? Where would you go? What one thing would you take with you?

I’d love to go back to Regency London, but just for one day. I don’t think I could take much more than that, lol!

QG: What music do you play when writing?

I listen to Brain.fm. It’s great at blocking out other noises and getting me to focus.

Thank for sharing with us, Meredith!

On her twenty-sixth birthday, she is sent to the wild Cornish coast to wed her reclusive betrothed, sight unseen, and with no choice in the matter, for he holds her father’s vowels and the mortgage to his townhouse in London. Beyond annoyed, she is more than ready for a challenge of thwarting the wicked earl at every turn.

Sebastian Hamilton, unrepentantly corrupted Earl of Reddingham, has been rejected from the London ton for a myriad of reasons. As duties and responsibilities press in, he’s compelled to put his life in order, and since he has been engaged from a young man of fifteen, it’s time to make the sacrifice. The one saving grace of being leg-shackled is introducing his innocent bride to forbidden carnal pleasures. Perhaps she might help him regain his rightful place in society and respectability.

Following a rather tempestuous nuptial ceremony, the earl sets out to initiate Evangeline into the world of scandal and sin. As each sensual night passes, confidences are exchanged that provide a closeness physical intimacy doesn’t. Shared emotions surprise them both, enhanced by mutual heat and attraction, but as an unexpected romance grows, fears creep in to stall their union. When a vicious squall blows in on the coast, they’ll need to decide that vulnerability and wanting love isn’t as horrid as they previously thought.

But will three wicked nights be enough…

She needs to ferret out his secrets. He’s doing his level best to keep them.

Miss Honor Winslow wants revenge. Her father has been missing since the war with Napoleon ended. Then a week ago, a letter arrived from him asking for help, but it wasn’t signed, and no address had been included. Needing answers, she enlists the help of one of her friends, who has connections to the Home Office. If the old, pompous windbags there won’t listen, she will do the job herself, despite her physical difficulties following a minor apoplexy.

All Mr. Gideon McGarrett wants out of life is peace, and nearly forty, it’s finally within reach. Ready to close his last mission, the only thing he needs to do is extract a man of high military rank from where he’s hiding after being wounded. The one thing that stands in the way of a spotless career is the damned interference of a clever and vulnerable woman who insists on joining his mission.

As Honor and Gideon bicker during the journey north, heated awareness springs from forced proximity, and all too soon that desire becomes distracting, especially when a faux engagement is offered out of necessity. Once in the Lake District, when they locate her father, the woman who wants him dead has also arrived. It will take some smart negotiating and perhaps a fight to unravel the mess. Only then can the pair make a go at a life together—if they can stop hiding their emotions and let down their guards to enjoy the ride.

Lady Juliet Dalton is not a romantic. She needs to escape her tyrannical father’s clutches, and marriage to a charming, conveniently rich duke will suffice. But, when she overhears an argument between her father and a mysterious stranger, she learns the horrifying truth. Her father wagered and lost their entire fortune, her dowry included.

Juliet is furious at her father and terrified of the fiancé willing to marry her penniless. She knows the future holds more of the same, cruelty and drudgery. But when that stranger, Michael Wayland, crashes into her life and refuses to leave, her days become anything but dreary. The handsome, enigmatic owner of a notorious gaming-hell, Michael owns her father’s debts. And, to Juliet’s astonishment, is winning her heart as well.

Unable to stay away, Juliet must decide whether the love she never expected is worth the wrath of her father and the contempt of the ton. When the temptation of Juliet’s bright eyes and alluring smile proves too much, Michael must make his own choice whether to bet on love.

Courting Scandal is a captivating and heartwarming debut novel by Ally Hudson. If you like Regency romances with witty, jaded rakes, and self-reliant heroines, then you’ll love this sweet and steamy story of found family, healing, and unexpected love.

Ian McDonough, Chieftain of Clan McDonough, and Scottish Duke of Sunbridge, has grown tired of the hassles of the London season, and his mother’s insistence that he find and marry an English bride was wearing thin. Of course, there was a time when he enjoyed all the frivolities the London season had to offer, but the responsibilities of his clan were waiting for him back at McDonough Castle in the Highlands of Scotland, and he determined it was time for him to take those responsibilities more seriously.
But thoughts of returning to Scotland fled his mind when he caught sight of a flash of blue silk at Redfield’s ball. He watched as the precocious lady skirted along the edge of the ballroom and he was instantly intrigued.
The lady, Emma Presley, niece of Viscount Yelverton, was visiting London with her uncle and aunt. Upon meeting Miss Presley, Ian was instantly drawn to her, but Emma was not going to make things easy for him.
Emma had never been to London before and knew because of her circumstances, it was unlikely that she would ever visit again. So, she was determined to make the most of the season.
The woman was as exasperating, impulsive, headstrong, and beautiful. But regardless of the trouble she caused, Ian knew that she belonged to him, and he would do anything to keep her and take her back to Scotland as his duchess. No matter who objected, even Emma.

QG: What is your favorite thing about the Regency – what do you like to write about?

I grew up with stern parents in a restrictive household, books were my refuge. What initially drew me to historical romance was the way the characters had to navigate the many rules of the era and the scrutiny of Society in order to weave their way to their happily ever after. I found their struggles and ultimate victories inspiring.

QG: What is your all-time favorite movie or series set in the Regency era?

I love the Jane Austen adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Matthew MacFadyen is my Mr. Darcy and Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson are forever Edward and Elinor. The only Persuasion movie that counts stars Ciaran Hinds, and Anya Taylor-Joy made a credible Emma.

QG: What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

The common advice “Write what you know” is absolute garbage. Write what you want to know. Write what interests you. It’s okay to push yourself. Research is a writer’s best companion. If you, like me, have no relationship with commas—learn the rules or hire an editor. A good editor is worth their weight in gold. Never let family/besties be your beta readers. They are too close to you to be truly objective. They either LOVE everything or are hyper-critical (soul-crushing) to show how seriously they are doing their job. Don’t do it. The best beta readers are other writers.

QG: Tell us about your current project or latest release.

My latest release, Last Lord Standing, is book three in my What Happens in the Ballroom series. In this book, I experimented with the notion of the hero also being the villain. The hero, Kerrigen Northam, agrees to do the wrong thing for all the right reasons. Of course, it all comes back to bite him in the butt once his heart is on the line. My next project is a standalone Regency that I’m calling Lord of Last Resort. This book has been fun to plot and will feature Benedictine Atwater, my most feisty heroine yet. Bene may be down, but she has the cunning and determination to fight for her happily ever after.

QG: What comes first, plot or characters?

For me, it’s the characters. Sometimes a name pops into my head. Sometimes it is a particular character trait. Once I have that stuck in my head I start to think about situations. Whether it’s the meet-cute or the dark moment, that’s where I start building the plot elements until I have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

QG: What is your favorite beverage when reading? What is it the rest of the time?

Unlike most writers, I don’t drink coffee. I’ve tried it but, no, hot bean water is not for me. I drink either water or a Frozen Coke from the local gas station. I got hooked on Frozen Coke when I was going through chemotherapy and my mouth was full of painful sores. Frozen Coke was the only thing that soothed the ache and didn’t taste like metal. I’m hooked now.

QG: What music do you play when writing?

I’ve created a writing playlist I call Whoaman which is a curious mix of sad/wistful songs, baroque music, and female power anthems. I balance that with another playlist I’ve named Angry Girl Singing. Lots of Alanis Morrisette, Beyonce, Rhianna, Pink, and Taylor Swift in there. Each book I write has one particular song that resonates with the mood/theme of the plot. For Last Lord Standing, it was Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars. To me, the line, “I don’t love you, but I always will” summed up Libby and Kerr’s relationship. For the first book in the series, How to Train Your Baron, the song was The Blower’s Daughter by Damian Rice. For book two, About an Earl, I was inspired by Aimee Mann’s Save Me.

Always the rogue and never the gentleman, Kerrigan Northam doesn’t worry about anything beyond his own pleasures. Now they want Kerr to keep her from considering any other eligible suitors…by courting her himself!

Libby is averse to the very idea of marriage. Why be auctioned off when she has a far more enticing—if scandalously modern—plan for her future? So when she’s rescued by a wickedly dashing gentleman who claims to be something of a scoundrel, Libby thinks she’s found the perfect partner in crime…

It’s the perfect ruse. Libby gets a secret accomplice and Kerr’s in the uniquely coveted position of being able to kiss the comely, spirited Libby as thoroughly—and as often—as possible. But as their courting charade continues, Kerr’s gone from wondering how long until she discovers his secret…to how long until he’s madly in love with her.

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, 1824.

Sometimes storms can unearth the most precious treasure. . .

Ever since he unexpectedly inherited his father’s earldom in the Scottish Highlands, Cameron Dunn’s been searching for something, anything, to bring meaning to his new life—a search that reaches an abrupt end when he’s washed up, alone, on a deserted beach in Mexico.

Or at least the beach should be deserted. There’s no village for hundreds of miles. So who’s that beautiful woman walking toward him over the sand?

Letty Monro has a business to run, a plan for her future. Rescuing a shipwrecked earl wasn’t on the agenda. But the man’s desperate, so of course she’ll bring him to the British Settlement—for fifty pounds. And his signet ring for collateral. She’s even prepared to look past the fact he’s a peer, part of the system of oppression she despises.

As they begin their journey, sailing south through the Caribbean sea, Cameron finds himself falling for this guarded, stubborn businesswoman, and the heat smoldering between them threatens to burst into flame. Keeping her distance from the Earl of Banton will prove one of the greatest challenges Letty has ever faced. Especially when she notices, in the distracting warmth of his brown eyes, the one thing they have in common . . . How lost they both truly are.

A Royal Love Story

Are you waiting, like me, for Season 3 of Bridgerton? If so, don’t miss the series prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, now streaming on Netflix. This collaboration between Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes offers an in-depth look at one of Bridgerton’s most intriguing characters.

However, don’t mistake this prequel for a documentary. In a prologue to the six-episode series, narrator Julie Andrews points out that Queen Charlotte is not a history lesson but rather “fiction based on fact.”

The story of this oft-overlooked queen’s life deserves a closer look. Her marriage contract signed before she even met the king, the 17-year-old Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz arrived in London on a September afternoon in 1761. Hailing from a remote province in Germany, she couldn’t even speak English.

Six hours later she was marrying her 22-year-old fiancé in a small ceremony in the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace. And two weeks after that she was at her husband’s side at their coronation in Westminster Abbey.

History tells us Charlotte and George conceived 15 children, 13 of whom lived to adulthood. They are the parents of the Prince Regent, later George IV, the man for whom the our beloved Regency era is named.

But what about the private lives of George and Charlotte? How did they relate to each other as a couple?

Queen Charlotte by Joshua Reynolds, 1779 (c) National Trust, Hatchlands; Supplied by The Public Catalogue Foundation

This is the focus of the series. It delves into how the teenage queen learns to love her husband and accept his mental illness. The themes of love, marriage and commitment are explored not only through the story of Charlotte’s life, but also though the experiences of Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgeton, matriarch of the Bridgerton clan.

The narrative alternates between the 1760s, when the young queen begins her reign, to the latter Regency years, when Britain is in the grip of a constitutional crisis after the heir to the throne, Princess Charlotte of Wales, dies giving birth to a stillborn son.

Faced with the prospect of no legitimate royal heir (although there were plenty of illegitimate ones) the aging Queen commands her adult children to marry respectable spouses and produce babies. Otherwise, George’s line will die with him, his legacy obliterated, and she’s determined not to let that happen.

It wouldn’t be Bridgerton without the conspicuous interracial mingling at the highest levels of society, and this prequel addresses how that situation came about. Here the king’s mother, Princess Augusta, refers to this racial mixing as the “Great Experiment,” and implies that her choice of Charlotte as Britain’s queen is a large part of it.

Unfortunately, this part of the plot is entirely fictional. The premise is based on the popular belief that Charlotte had African ancestry, and thus she introduced a Black bloodline into the royal family.

1767 pastel portrait of Charlotte with her eldest daughter, by Francis Cotes.

Though this hypothesis has been bandied about for years, it’s never been proven. The discussion of Charlotte’s racial heritage resurfaced more recently when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle, a biracial woman.

Regarding the king and queen’s private relationship, we do know that contrary to the conventions of the time they often slept in the same bed, at least until his madness overcame him. And, although she seldom saw him after his condition deteriorated irrevocably in 1811, Charlotte remained her husband’s guardian until her death in 1818.

In my opinion this prequel is a worthy addition to the Bridgerton saga. It’s well-paced with lots of drama and steamy romance, the acting is top-notch, and the settings, including the costumes, are magnificent, whether the story takes us to the mid-18th century or the latter years of the Regency.

Production details aside, Queen Charlotte is a touching love story. Two young people, strangers at their wedding, learn how to love and care for each other as they also learn how to perform their duties as leaders of their country.

Their path wasn’t smooth, especially at first. But as Violet Bridgerton says many years later over tea with Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury: “Love can bloom from the thorniest of gardens, can it not?”

And the queen, though somewhat disillusioned by this point, has to agree.

QG: When did you first get hooked (and what hooked you) on the Regency era?

I read Georgette Heyer when I was young, and collected all of the books a few at a time, mostly at secondhand bookstores, so I could read them again. I loved her humor, and thoroughly enjoyed her secondary characters. However, I didn’t become hooked on the Regency era as a writer until many years later. My daughter gave me Slightly Wicked, by Mary Balogh. I read it and searched out the rest of the series. Then I read everything Mary Balogh had published up to that time, and followed up with Stephanie Laurens, Jo Beverley, Sarah MacLean, Loretta Chase, and Lisa Kleypass—I devour books at an enormous rate, and at that time I was doing a lot of traveling. My little Kindle reader became stuffed with Regency and Georgian romance, plots started spinning through my mind, and I was off.

QG: What did you want to be when you were ten or twelve?

A novelist and a mother. I was a writer and a mother by the time I was twenty-three if you count occasional publication of short stories and heaps of commercial writing. Novels had to wait. I published my first in my sixties, and now have seventeen novels published or on preorder, two more currently in the pipeline, and a publishing contract for a further seven.

QG: What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Three things. 1. Write if it makes you happy. The chances it will make you rich are slender in the extreme, but creating stories is a joy that is always accessible. 2. Write every day. The water won’t flow if you don’t prime the pump. 3. Keep writing even if it feels like rubbish. We authors aren’t the best judges of our own work, and besides, you are writing, not editing. Good books aren’t written. They are rewritten.

QG: Tell us about your current project or latest release.

My project in 2022 was to set myself up to have a book published every month in 2023. I’m writing at the end of April and have had five books published so far this year, with five new releases booked and on prerelease between now and the end of August. I’m still writing September’s release, but am two-thirds through. October’s and November’s are done, and December’s is started.

I think I’ll make it.

My big project last year was the stories in my new series with Dragonblade Publishing, A Twist Upon a Regency Tale. It’s a reinterpretation of traditional fairy and folk tales set in the Regency, with no magic and with the roles reversed. February’s release was the first novel. April’s was a Lyon’s Den Connected World story set in the same world as the Twist novels. So far, the readers are loving them both. Three more to come this year, and I’ve signed up for a further four for 2024.

It has been such fun to figure out how to include the fairy tale elements. For example, my Snow White character is poisoned by hemlock in an apple pie, and kept alive until the paralysis wears off by expired air breathing, which used to be called the kiss of life.

QG: Is there a special quote or saying that motivates you as a writer?

Shannon Hale says “When writing a first draft, I have to remind myself constantly that I’m only shoveling sand into a box so later I can build castles.”

QG: Do you have a daily writing schedule and goals? What are they?

I have a daily goal, which I may or may not reach. On some days, 50 words is a victory. I also have a monthly goal, and that I do focus on, for if I miss my monthly goal, I topple the whole pack of cards. But, meh. Life happens. It’s better to stretch for the high goal and just miss than to bend to the low goal and succeed.

A schedule? Not so much. I write in patches throughout the day, whenever I’m not doing something else. I can usually do 500 words before they begin to run dry and I go and garden or cook or take a walk. I might do four or five sessions a day, however.

QG: What comes first, plot or characters?

It varies, but if the plot occurs to me first, it goes nowhere till I have the characters. For me, the plot is about the development of the principal characters. The hero and the heroine, in my books. The adventure and the relationship have to help them learn something about themselves, and the romance can’t be complete until that has happened. So the characters drive the plot, sometimes in quite unexpected directions.

Don’t blame me. It’s all down to the plot elves. I just watch what the characters are doing and write it down.

QG: Pantser or Plotter or hybrid?

After that, you’ll figure that I’m a pantser. I was very much a plotter as a commercial writer, and even gave talks about the time spent on the outline. But with my first novel, it all fell apart when I got to the end of the prologue. In the prologue, the heroine confronted the villain and must have been very convincing. He killed himself between the prologue and the first chapter, and my outline had to go in the bin. Since then, I haven’t bothered with more than a broad thumbnail sketch, subject to change without notice.

QG: Would you like to travel back in time? Where would you go? What one thing would you take with you?

I travel back in time with every historical book I read, and every historical story I write. It’s the safest way. In a real time machine? I’m not going unless I can take antibiotics, dental anesthesia, and indoor plumbing. That’s three things, so I guess that leaves me out. Forced to choose, I think I’d love to go back and meet Shakespeare and the one thing I’d take with me would be the escape button. Those folks back then were tough, man!

If You Liked These Popular Regency Romance Novels, Read These Historical Non-Fiction Books

By Katherine Grant

One of the reasons I love reading Regency romance novels is the opportunity to learn something new. As a history nerd, I often find a topic mentioned in passing and dive deep into a research rabbit hole to find out more.

That’s how I have become an “expert” in things as diverse as curricles, the history of buttons, and the presence of lemons in England.

Even more than that, as an author, I love to dig into the larger socioeconomic trends that shaped the Regency world. How many families could afford to hire governesses? Were their gowns really transparent? What was it actually like living on a sailing ship?

For those of you who love to mix historical non-fiction with your historical romance books, read on for research recommendations based on five popular Regency romances!

If You Liked These 5 Regency Romance Novels, Read These Non-Fiction Books

If you liked…

Accidentally Compromising the Duke by Stacy Reid
When Adeline sneaks into a gentleman’s bedroom, she thinks she will be caught in bed with her secret crush. Instead, she is compromised with a duke – who has a reputation for being reclusive, grumpy, and possibly cruel. In their ensuing marriage of convenience, Adeline learns that much of his behavior comes from the deep grief of losing his first wife in childbirth – and fear that he might lose Adeline the same way.

Try…

In the Family Way: Childbearing in the British Aristocracy, 1760-1860 by Judith Schneid Lewis
This fantastic book uses journals and letters from real British aristocratic women to explore what pregnancy was like in Regency England (and how it changed from the Georgian to Victorian periods). You’ll learn everything from the care provided by accoucheurs to how couples dealt with infertility. Since her focus is exclusively on the aristocracy, the book works well for anyone interested in those dukes of the Regency.

If you liked…

The Secret Pearl by Mary Balogh
Mary Balogh, one of the reigning queens of Regency romance, takes on the governess trope in The Secret Pearl. It is one of her darker stories, beginning with a somewhat disturbing encounter between a young woman and a wealthy stranger, who later come face to face again when he hires her as governess for his children. From there, they negotiate the waters of their growing attraction – and his so-called marriage – to find their way to love.

Try…

A Governess in the Age of Jane Austen: The Journals and Letters of Agnes Porter edited by Joanna Martin

This book combines a little of historical context with a treasured primary source. In the intro, Joanna Martin tells us about Agnes Porter and the family she worked for, the Earl of Ilchester (and later his daughter). She also gives us insight into how common governesses were in Regency England and what Agnes expected in terms of lifetime care from her employers. From there, you can explore Agnes’s world yourself with her journal entries and letters. It is a wonderful insight into the world of a noble family and their trusted servant.

If you liked…

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

The first installment of The Society of Sirens series, The Rakess tells the story of a Regency heroine who doesn’t behave well and doesn’t care what anyone has to say about it. Seraphina is determined to write her memoirs as part of her crusade for women’s rights, and Adam Anderson is just a handsome distraction. Of course, shenanigans ensue once they start catching feelings for each other, but throughout the novel, Seraphina remains a fiercely independent woman who is confident in choosing to live unlike any other.

Try…
Mad and Bad: Real Heroines of the Regency by Bea Koch

This book makes it easy and fun to learn about some of the stand-out women of Regency England. You’ll get quick biographies of everyone from the women who guarded Almack’s Club to the woman who wrote the first English-language Kosher cookbook. As the blurb says, “In Mad and Bad, we look beyond the popular perception of the Regency into the even more vibrant, diverse, and fascinating historical truth.”

If you liked…

A Duke, The Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley
West Indian heiress Patience Jordan is gaslighted – and imprisoned – for questioning her husband’s suicide. To get her child back, she poses as a nanny for his guardian, a duke. Of course, they are both surprised by each other, and soon they are working together to unravel what exactly happened to Patience’s husband.

Try…

Staying Power: The History of Black People in Britain by Peter Fryer
This is a read that will stay with you. It defines, defies, and tracks definitions of “Blackness” in Britain starting with Roman invasions through to the mid-twentieth century. It also gives important context for how Regency Britain was deeply involved in the slave trade, how its economy was propped up by colonial plantations powered by enslaved people, and how British society was already diverse by the turn of the nineteenth century.

If you liked…

The Duke and the Lady in Red by Lorraine Heath
Rosalind Sharpe catches the duke’s eye – and decides to make the most of it. When he offers her a ridiculous sum of money for a week in bed together, she agrees. Of course, there is more than just symbolic red between them; very quickly, their connection grows deep and meaningful. The only question is what comes next.

Try…

A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield
I picked this book up on a whim only to discover the history of the color red has a huge impact on the British economy and norms, even up through the Regency period. In this popular history book, you’ll learn how textiles were made before the industrial revolution, how they were dyed, and how the technology for dying clothes became matters of great political and economic consequence to colonial empires. It is a quick, easy, and fascinating read!

Of course, these five non-fiction Regency books are just scratching the surface. For any of the above books, I recommend checking out the authors’ notes or websites to see if they list other research resources!

As for me, reading each of the books listed above (novels and non-fiction) has inspired my own historical romance novels.

April in Georgian History

April 2, 1801 the HMS Elephant sank the pro-French Danish fleet in the Battle of Copenhagen thanks to Horatio Nelson deliberately disobeying orders. He famously claimed his blind eye made him unable to see the signal flags.

April 9, 1806 Isambard Kingdom Brunel born. His impact on railroads, roads, and shipping would be immense. If you’ve been to Balmoral, you’ve seen a Brunel bridge. On April 8, 1838, The Great Western, the first regular transatlantic steamship, designed by Brunel,  left Bristol for its maiden voyage.

Mistletoe Myths

Christmastime in Regency England began on Christmas Eve—it was considered bad luck to decorate any earlier, a tradition lost in this very commercial modern world. Decorations included holly with its prickly green leaves and bright red berries, green ivy and fragrant rosemary, evergreen boughs, laurel and bay leaves, and—of course—mistletoe. In the countryside, this could be collected, and in the city, it could be purchased, and many an enterprising young person might gather the greenery to sell and raise some money.

This image is from the early 1800s and shows a couple about to kiss underneath a bough of mistletoe. Others sit around them and another couple waits their turn.

Jane Austen also mentions cutting out ornaments from gold paper and silk to pin onto the greenery. The decorations would stay in place until Epiphany, or Twelfth Night, when it was said the three kings or magi visited baby Jesus, and Twelfth Night cake would be served. It would be bad luck to leave it up any longer, and so the greenery—now dry—would be burned.

The custom of kissing under the mistletoe—or kissing bough—was in place in Regency England, but its exact origins are lost.

Mistletoe was prized by the ancient Greeks, and included in marriage ceremonies. Romans used the plant as a symbol of peace. The Norse considered it a symbol of peace as well, with a myth about the death of Baldur, killed by a spear of the plant, and after that the goddess Frigg declared the mistletoe to instead be a symbol of love. The Druids thought the plant, which grows upon other trees, had magical and medicinal powers and brought good luck. It was usually found on apple trees, but was considered a divine plant when found upon oak trees. The Druids used mistletoe to cure infertility, but mistletoe was a herbal remedy used for centuries to treat arthritis, epilepsy, hypertension, headaches, and menopausal symptoms.

Its modern name comes to us from Old English mistiltan, which in turn comes from the old Saxon words mistel, a word of uncertain origins, and Proto-Germanic word tan, meaning “twig” (which in turn traces back to the Old Saxon and Old Frisian word ten, and the Old Norse teinn).

While decorating with mistletoe in winter dates to pre-Christian times—it was a custom in Wales to decorate the house with mistletoe—Mark Forsyth in his book A Christmas Cornucopia: The Hidden Stories Behind Our Yuletide Traditions traced the tradition of a kiss under the mistletoe to starting up somewhere between 1720 and 1784 in England. Forsyth notes mention of mistletoe in print in 1719 and 1720 books by John Colbatch. The apothecary and physician wrote on the superstitions and customs associated with mistletoe, but without a mention of kissing. That could be due to him being more interested in its medicinal properties. Forsyth also mentions stories from the 1700s depicted women “using the mistletoe excuse to elude possessive husbands and parents”—so it seems to have been a way to break some rules.

The tradition holds that a man is allowed to kiss any woman—or a woman may kiss any man—standing beneath a sprig of mistletoe, or a kissing bough made by weaving the mistletoe into a ball. If the kiss is refused, bad luck befalls that person. When a kiss is taken, a berry is plucked off the mistletoe, and after the last berry has been taken, no more kisses can be stolen.

But a Regency Christmas was not just about stolen kisses. The Reverend William Holland, who served at the vicarage of Overstowe in Somerset, kept a diary of his life there from 1799 to 1818. Not only did he hold the traditional Christmas Eve service, with its church bells calling the faithful to attend, he and his family would be woken early on Christmas by wassailers who sang for their traditional drink. Holland then opened his house to these folks and the villagers for food and drink, showing the custom in Regency England of goodwill and charity at Christmastime. Let us hope he also had some mistletoe in the house.

When one believes in love, they will embrace …

Jacqueline Holbrooke refused to become the latest match in her uncle’s mad matchmaking scheme. She watched her sisters and cousins fall victim to his madness. Yet, if she were honest with herself, they weren’t victims, but just as mad as their uncle. Madly in love. An emotion Jacqueline fought to keep from embracing. However, the dashing viscount she shared scandalous trysts with kept breaking down the barriers guarding her heart.

Griffen Kincaid carried on an affair with an innocent lady for the past three years. With every secret rendezvous, she wrapped her spell tighter around him. He waited with patience for Jacqueline to accept his offer. However, every time she rejected his suit. When her family learned of their affair, he must prove himself worthy of her love. Griffen set out to woo Jacqueline, enticing her into a scandalous bet to win her affections.

A lady who allowed her fears to keep her from finding happiness. A gentleman whose past behavior could ruin his chance at winning his true love’s heart. Will Jacqueline and Griffen allow the obstacles in their path to tear their fragile love asunder? Or will they embrace the seduction of their love?

If you enjoy scandalous romances filled with stolen kisses and unwavering love, then you’ll love Jacqueline and Griffen’s seductive love affair.
