Is your hero’s country house Baroque, Palladian, Neoclassical, or something else? What does that tell you about his politics, social standing, and finances? Upper class homes impart a great deal of information about those who live in them. Since our characters rarely own new residences, it helps to understand the various styles found in England and the social and political pressures that created them. English Architecture will cover four hundred years of private homes, both country seats and town houses, providing details that can broaden characterization and make scene setting easier by teaching how various styles of housing are laid out. While the class will focus mostly on exterior style during the 16th & 17th centuries, it will include interiors for the 18th & 19th centuries, cover the ways the industrial revolution changed life, and discuss the expansions of Carlton House, the Brighton Pavilion, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle that were undertaken during the architectural Regency period.
Note to those who took this class before: Ms. Lane has expanded the lessons to include Victorian architecture as several of our members now write in that period, and she has also acquired more illustrations and added new material to all the lessons, so you might find it useful to sign up again.
