The Regency Academe
Rules of Engagement

The Regency Academe’s Forums are intended to be a place for us to come together to discuss our shared love for Regency history and writing. By registering for an Academe class, you agree to follow our Rules of Engagement.

Please be mindful of Regency Fiction Writers’ Core Values at all times:

  • Regency Fiction Writers welcomes all writers of Regency-set fiction, regardless of stage of publication and publication path of the writers, and level of sexuality, range of plot elements, and degree of historical accuracy in their books.
  • Regency Fiction Writers welcomes all writers, regardless of race, creed, religion, ethnicity, nationality, age, body size, physical appearance, neurodiversity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, or ability or other factors.
  • All authors must feel free to create their historical worlds, determining the level of historical accuracy, the types and diversities of characters, the level of sexuality, and other factors.

Additionally, when on the Academe Forums:

  1. Be respectful of your classmates and instructors. Follow the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Before you post, ask yourself, would I say this to someone’s face?
  2. Hate speech and harassment will not be tolerated.
  3. Please do not be argumentative with the instructor or with fellow students. Anyone who has studied the historical record knows that there are almost always exceptions to a rule. Just because you are right, it does not necessarily follow that someone else is wrong. While it is perfectly appropriate to mention pertinent exceptions, please do not belabor the point, or use them to dispute the expertise of the instructor or your fellow students.
  4. It can be helpful to ask yourself, is the comment I am about to make an empirical fact or is it my personal opinion? There is a world of difference between saying, “I prefer books that are [description],” and, “The only books that are any good are [description].” Make sure that in stating your opinions, you are not denigrating the opinions of others.
  5. If you choose to write a post disagreeing with someone, take that extra moment to make sure you are doing so respectfully.
  6. Please allow the instructor to teach the course. While we want to have a lively class discussion, lengthy posts in which you assume the teacher’s role are not appropriate. Keep in mind that when a fellow student asks a question, 99% of the time they are hoping to hear from the instructor.
  7. Please be aware that our instructors come from all around the world and their schedule may therefore be the opposite of yours. If you do not receive an immediate response to your question, this may be why and we appreciate your patience.
  8. Please keep in mind that the Academe is run by volunteers. We will do our best to assist you promptly, but an instant response is not always possible. We expect you to be polite in your communications with all Academe instructors, volunteers, and classmates, 100% of the time.
  9. Please remember that all materials posted by the instructor and/or a student are protected by copyright. They are intended for your own personal use, but may not be forwarded, reproduced, or otherwise shared without the express written permission of the copyright holder.
  10. Other behaviors that will not be tolerated include threats, impersonating another person, doxxing, posting advertisements/spam, libel, copyright violations, posting illegal content, malware, or any other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting.

The Academe reserves the right to modify or remove comments, to lock participants’ ability to comment, to remove students from a class, and to bar students from participating in future classes.

If you see an inappropriate comment, please notify us immediately at academemoderator (at) regencyfictionwriters (dot) org. While the Academe makes every effort to remove objectional material as quickly as possible, comments are not pre-moderated. Therefore, please understand that posts made in our Forums express the views and opinions of the author, and not of Regency Fiction Writers or the Regency Academe.

If you do not feel that you can comply with these rules while using our class forums, you have 24 hours to contact the moderator to request a refund, at which point you will be removed from the class. If you choose to remain in the class, this indicates your agreement with and willingness to abide by the Academe’s Rules of Engagement.
