Web Site Do’s and Don’ts   By Cheryl Bolen

When Jane Austen wrote her novels, she used a quill pen and a bottle of ink to make a fair copy of her manuscript on hand-made paper. She sent it off to her publisher, who had it type-set by hand, printed and distributed to book-sellers and circulating libraries. Her publisher might have taken out an ad in some of the more widely circulated newspapers. That was the extent of book promotion during the Regency. But for those who write Regency novels today, technology has made it possible to promote those books in a number of different ways. In today’s article, Cheryl Bolen shares some tips from a web mistress who has designed web sites for a number of prominent authors. Whether you have had a web site for years or have just published your first novel and are ready to set up your web site, you will find sage advice from a professional in Cheryl’s article.

Alison Stuart ~ Featured Author Post

Award winning Australian author Alison Stuart always wanted to be a writer. As a teenager she scribbled turgid historical novels in shorthand notebooks, some of which are still in existence. Only when she dislocated a shoulder in a skiing accident, which left her stranded in a snow bound chalet in the Australian Alps with nothing for company but a notebook computer, did she dare to write the story that had been tugging at her sleeve for so long.

Her family moved from Kenya, where she had been born, to Australia in the late 1960s. Alison had imagined Australia as a place where kangaroos roamed the streets (just as, no doubt, children in Australia imagined Africa as a place where lions roamed the streets), but the inner suburbs of Perth seemed short of roving marsupials.

She studied Law and Arts at university and has worked all her life as a lawyer, both in private practice and in a range of different organizations including the military and the emergency services and a fatal attraction for men in uniform (including her husband) may explain her leaning towards soldier heroes!

Alison has been a finalist in competitions, including the shortlist of the Catherine Cookson Fiction Prize. In 2007 her first two novels BY THE SWORD and THE KING’S MAN were published. BY THE SWORD won the 2008 Eppie Award for Best Historical Romance.

These days Alison is writing full time and is officially an empty nester, with a wonderfully supportive husband (and resident military expert) and two needy cats to keep her company.

TBM Forum:   Working on the Web Round-Up

The August articles in the Working on the Web forum range from advice on book promotion to the SEO value of images and tips on the legal use of those images. Featured Beau Monde author Regan Walker shared her advice and experience on promoting her newly-released book, Racing with the Wind. She has provided a plethora of marketing tips of which any author can take advantage to help spread the word about their own books. Our ongoing SEO series offers an article about how the images you use on your web site or blog can help you to increase the search engine optimization of your site. Those same techniques will also help to make your web pages more user-friendly for your visitors with visual impairments. A companion article considers the issues related to the use of images on web and blog pages and includes links to several sites which explain how to avoid legal problems which can arise if images are not used appropriately.

Next month, the Working on the Web article on SEO will explain the intricacies of incoming and outgoing links and how to understand their varying value in terms of search engine optimization. It is these links which make the Web a web. You can learn how to build your own "web" to make your web site or blog more visible in search engine results listings. The blogging article originally planned for this month, which will explain an important feature available for blog posts which most bloggers overlook, even though it helps them capture statistics on those individual posts, has been postponed until next month.

A Dead Bore by Sheri Cobb South

Belgrave House/Regency Reads

Regency Mystery

Escaping scandal following her husband’s death (In Milady’s Chamber), Lady Fieldhurst accepts an invitation to a Yorkshire house party. Tragedy follows her there when the vicar, author of a dull local history, dies in a fire. She suspects murder, and sends to Bow Street for John Pickett. Posing as her footman, he investigates from belowstairs while she gathers information above. But Pickett finds her assistance both a help and an all-too-pleasant hindrance.
